Volcanic activity sparks the Arctic Oscillation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract The parasol effect of volcanic dust and aerosol caused by eruption results in the deepening strengthening Arctic vortex system, thus stimulating or Oscillation (AO). Three strongest AOs more than a century have been linked to eruptions. Every significant fluctuation AO index (AOI = ?H_middle latitudes ? ?H_Arctic) for many years has associated with eruption. Volcanic activity occurring at different locations circulation will exert effects on polar vortex.

Arctic Oscillation response to volcanic eruptions in the IPCC AR4 climate models

[1] Stratospheric sulfate aerosol particles from strong volcanic eruptions produce significant transient cooling of the troposphere and warming of the lower stratosphere. The radiative impact of volcanic aerosols also produces a response that generally includes an anomalously positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) that is most pronounced in the boreal winter. The main atmospheric thermal...

On the Teleconnectivity of the "Arctic Oscillation"

The term "Arctic Oscillation" (AO) has recently been introduced to describe the leading structure of SLP variability over the Northern Hemisphere. A key feature of the AO is its zonally symmetric appearance, with a primary center of action over the Arctic and opposing anomalies in midlatitudes. Does the AO's annular appearance result from significant temporal correlations between SLP anomalies ...

Seismoacoustic evidence for volcanic activity on the ultraslow- spreading Gakkel Ridge, Arctic Ocean

[1] In 1999, a swarm of earthquakes and a lava flow signaled a volcanic eruption at the eastern end of Gakkel Ridge, the slowest spreading ridge worldwide. In summer 2001, the multidisciplinary Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge Expedition studied these ridge processes which are unusual at ultraslow spreading rates. As part of these studies, we examined the microearthquake activity of the ridge with seismo...

Teleconnection between the Arctic Oscillation and Hudson Bay river discharge

[1] Rising surface air temperatures in response to anthropogenic forcing are intensifying the global hydrologic cycle. Some of the more dramatic signs of climate change are increasing precipitation, evaporation, and freshwater discharge in continental river basins draining to high-latitude oceans. At regional scales, however, an acceleration of the hydrologic cycle is not always detected. In co...

Forcing of the Arctic Oscillation by Eurasian snow cover

1 Throughout much of the latter half of the 20th century, the dominant mode of North2 ern Hemisphere (NH) extratropical wintertime circulation variability−the Arctic Oscillation 3 (AO)−exhibited a positive trend, with decreasing high-latitude sea-level pressure (SLP) and 4 increasing mid-latitude SLP. General circulation models (GCMs) show this trend is related 5 to several factors, including N...
